Spirit-led worship.
The last couple of months I’ve had a real desire to be more in tune with the Holy Spirit as I lead worship. Over the last six months it has really felt like God has been moving in a whole new way in our church community. We’ve been seeing lots of healings and words in our Sunday and midweek services.
We’ve also had lots of times of singing out in the spirit and extended ministry. I am so longing to be part of this move of God, as an individual, but also as one of the worship leaders. If God is doing something new, so the prophetic sound of the worshippers should be rising.
So, I’ve been wondering how I (a mere mortal), am to know what the Holy Spirit wants to do amongst us during the thirty minutes or so that I have been authorised to sing?
Here are some thoughts I’ve been practicing –
Ask, Wait & Listen. Its only recently that I’ve learnt not to rush through a set list, marching through every song with perfect musical transition as well as a tidy and passionate “every hand is lifted” response from the congregation… and don’t forget the anthemic climax to finish the set with a great sense of “yep, I did my job this morning!”
Nope. There’s got to be more. God is Alive, He is amongst us, and He doesn’t live in religious routines or formula’s. He is able to be seen through authenticity, originality and creativity. He also moves when we let go and take risks.
Ask – What is God doing? How can my set list reflect this? How can I allow space during the worship to wait on God (without it being awkward or weird)? What other people on the team can minister through their playing? (eg. we have some string players that are incredible at playing prophetically… drummers… guitarists… bv’s etc)
Wait & Listen – Stopping to pray. Before a service its pretty hectic – sound checks, rehearsals, people late, people in bad moods (not me ofcourse!!!), lyrics, chords, make-up (girls), run sheets, breakfast, hurry up must get off stage… and quick we better pray before we start…
It’s so important that we stop and wait on God for a moment, to re-align our heart, mind and soul with His. To ask Him to fill us again that he would lead and unite us - that we are able to lead others.
Open your eyes. I met with Ele Mumford Recently (Pastor of Vineyard Church UK) and asked her how we can be more “Spirit-Led” as we lead worship, and she said a few things but the one answer that stuck with me was “Keep your Eyes Open”. Wow. What a simple and strange thing to say. Do we see the Holy Spirit dance around the room as we look out from the stage? Does He point out people or hover in a ghostly manner? Hmmm, it have never seen it that way, but as I have practiced keeping my eyes open over the last few weeks, and have taken my time in the songs, not rushing from section to section, but allowing space, I have seen by the way people are responding moments where God is moving amid different people, and I can lead according.
Recently I had formed a bit of a habit of shutting my eyes – with the intention of minimising distraction, however there’s a real danger of missing whats going on out there and getting lost in your own “land of worship”. Having my eyes open has helped me get a sense of what is going on in the room. Sometimes it feels like not much and it might be that an encouragement might help, but other times I can see people responding in physical ways, or really pouring themselves out and expressing their love for God. This has really helped me know how to guide the music forward.
Learn the new songs. Sometimes it can be easier and more comfortable to sing the songs we know. These are the songs we’ve done a thousand times before, the crowd pleasers that almost always conjure some response yet don’t take up too much of our time during the week. Its funny though cause God always seems to be doing something NEW, and often the spirit moves through a new song, a new sound. In the Psalms it often says “Sing to the Lord a new song”… Ps 149 I’m not sure it always means literally (you can sing an ‘old’ song in your heart with a ‘new’ spirit). But sometimes I do think it does mean literally – we need to listen out for new songs that are helping people worship perhaps locally, or maybe globally. Songs can become catalysts for a new move of the Holy Spirit, even ushering in revivals. Its important to keep our ears open to hear the new songs, but also be disciplined enough to learn them.
Come Expectant. Bring Faith. We don’t see the Holy Spirit in the physical but we do believe that He is with us. We believe the promise that when we ask Him to come, He does. And so when we prepare, in the natural things, as well as in our hearts we need to truly believe that God is using us, as worship leaders, in a powerful way. Wouldn’t it be amazing to see God do the miraculous in worship? That people would be healed and set free when we sing? That as the music plays people’s minds are filled with pictures and visions, their hearts overflowing with prophetic songs? Wouldn’t it be incredible if when we gathered to worship we were surprised and overwhelmed, not just emotionally but actually the outworking of God revealed in the fruit of people’s lives as they continue to sing His praises corporately. We need to believe in what we do. Believe that it’s important, that God has called us to it for His purpose and for His church. God is Alive and is able to do anything at anytime – so let’s go for it and see God move through our churches and cities. Amen!
Brilliant :) Thank you.
We spoke about this yesterday at our third ever band practice as a youth band. We have our own service, but as were quite new as a band (and especially me as a worship leader) we spend SO much time trying to get the music right and not enough time on the worship.
Our youth leader yesterday was encouraging us to spend more time in prayer and worship during practices but mainly to be aware of what the Holy Spirit is doing - this couldn't have been published at a better time for us
Oh, and I love your reply Pauline - "This morning our weakness is NO LYRICS!" hahahahaha

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU
What a relief to read this blog.
I'm a massive advocate of the prophetic in worship and have been banging on about it for years.
When we allow the Holy Spirit to lead and inspire us in times of worship. When we remove the boundaries of conventional worship times and allow God to move, He moves. Simple as that.
I've seen people being physically and emotionally healed (I've personally been physically healed in worship), set free from demonic influence in times of intense Spirit lead worship where God's presence has been so tangible anything is possible.
Keep doing what your doing Nikki, keep pushing the boundaries. There's so much more. Where gonna see an explosion of His presence and worship and prayer will be are the heart of it. Hours of heartfelt, abandonment before God, prophecy, proclamation, testimony all mixed together in worship.
It doesn't happen over night, congregations need to be educated to know how to respond. For example if there's a time of spontaneous singing or instrumental if you know how to respond in it and enter in it can be an amazingly powerful time. If you don't know what's going on you'd probably be standing there twiddling your thumbs. The church needs to be educated and encouraged to respond.
Thanks again for sharing, very encouraging.
God bless.

Thanks Nikki for that post, very encouraging!
This is something I'm endeavoring to cultivate in our own little church. I'm curious Masood how you go about educating a congregation in spontaneous singing and worship? This may be a silly question but do you just step up to the mike and say "OK, we're all going to sing whatever comes to our heart for five minutes."? What have you found that worked well for you?
Blessings,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
On a practical level moving into prophetic worship is a progressive journey. We are so used to singing the songs on the projector screen that at first its hard to tap into Spirit led spontaneous worship. We need to explain to the congregation what's going on and explain the spiritual dynamics of what's going on. Then you just do it and keep doing it, leading by example then over time people start getting it and entering in. Encourage people to be expressive. At first the worship leader should repeat a phrase and encourage the congregation to sing out that phrase, then build on that.
My experience of prophetic worship happened over a period of 6 years. We got to a point as a congregation where we could worship for 2 hours without using one set song. Holy Spirit would take us on a creative journey and God would speak through the worship time.
It doesn't have to be elaborate, just simple phrase can be so powerful. It just needs to be heartfelt, honest and real. It's like unblocking a well to give a scriptural picture, when the well is unblocked the rivers of living water can flow. Once God said to me while I was leading worship "How can I resist the heartfelt praises of my people, surely I will come". That is powerful. God is searching for people who will worship Him in spirit and truth, when He finds it he can't resist it, it draws His presence, which is what it's all about, more of Him. There is so much more to worshipping in spirit and truth than just singing in tongues which is what it's often restricted to.
I'd encourage you to just go for it.
Bless you buddy
Masood

Our church does this every week, it is so important to let the HS do what it wants to do. Whether I am leading worship or co-leading I always ask God to come and do what HE WANTS! To mess us up in His presence.

What an excellent post Nikki spirit lead worship is so important and Ele Mumford is so right with her advice to keep your eyes open. We need to look around as we lead worship, see what God is doing with people in our congregation. How can we allow the Holy Spirt room to move if we don't recognise when He is moving amongst His people?
As for waiting on God... I have found similar problems before we start morning worship... it can be really busy and stressful.
I have chosen to ask the PA guys to set up the night before and go help them do it. We then do the majority of the sound check and even a full team practice if everyone else can make it too. That leaves so much more time in the Sunday morning that we have loads of time to pray.
Recently we did this before a 'big' baptism service (lots of visitors etc)...we did all the set up etc the night before and ran through the worship. Then spent lots of time praying in the morning.
We realised at 10:15 that the laptop was missing... someone was supposed to be bringing it with them and they had not arrived yet. Eventually they appeared just before the service... hooked it up to the projector and lo and behold the cabling failed and we had NO LYRICS for the first 1/2 of the service. Normally I would have already been really stressed trying to get everything sorted in time for morning worship and the laptop failure would have really thrown me. This particular morning I was completely unfazed! As we started worship I talked very briefly about Romans 12 and how worship is so much more than singing songs and talked about how God meets us in our weakness. This morning our weakness is NO LYRICS! Lets go meet God!
I believe because we spent a lot of time in prayer before the service we were all able to remain focused on God even when it felt like everything was going a bit wrong!
